This last “Martha Day” was a weird day. The main group that has spearheaded this project demonstrates the Heart and Spirit of the TIGER. Even though the number of participants has been low, they were a group of such hard working people! Clint Wright and Keith Valigura brought chain saws to work on the huge stump in the front of her house. They just weren’t long enough to get to the middle of the stump. They were taking it down in sections and made some progress but the closer they got to the ground, the more the diameter increased. Georgette's job was to keep raking the wood chips away from the stump and hack away the dead parts so they could try to get closer to the middle. Jeanine Howe was there, too. She went out and bought a sledgehammer and some wood splitting wedges. They all took turns whacking at the KILLER STUMP. They would get one wedge stuck and have to use the other one to dislodge it, only to have THAT one get stuck. This went on to the point of being comical. (Of course anytime Clint and Keith are involved, it’s comical!!!) Glenn Harris was there as well and spilt tons of sweat and tears along with everyone else. Mimi Devereaux’s husband, Ron brought his chain saw and took his turn at the stump for a while. A friend, Alvin – not from our class – stopped by and sawed on it and whacked at it with an ax and the sledgehammer. (He also mowed Martha’s yard.) While one person was sawing, the others were sharpening their blades. After about 7 hours and four chain saw blades, they called it a day. Maybe we’re going to have to get a professional out there to take out that stump.
Steve Byrum was limited on time that day but he was kind enough to bring us a case of “beverages.”
** I apologize for the corny comments but I just could NOT resist. No offense was meant toward ANY of the wonderful volunteers that had the fortitude to show up and stay!!!
On behalf of Martha and Anthony - Thank you ALL!!!!!
